The Copper Door Wedding Venue in La Vernia: A Photographer's Guide

wedding photography

The Copper Door is a family-owned wedding venue in La Vernia, about 25 miles southeast of San Antonio. Matt and Roxann Gray opened it in 2019, and it pairs a modern farmhouse with open country grounds, so you can hold your ceremony indoors or out. Every photo in this guide comes from Sophia and Thomas's wedding there.

This guide covers the ceremony site, the reception hall, the getting-ready rooms, the best photo spots and decor ideas. If you're still comparing venues, see our guide to the best wedding venues in San Antonio, or our roundup of La Vernia wedding venues.

The Farmhouse and Grounds

The main building is a modern farmhouse with a stone base, dark siding, a wall of tall windows and a second-floor balcony. Out back, an open lawn edged by oak trees stretches toward the country views, with string lights overhead for the evening.

The Outdoor Ceremony Site

Outdoor ceremonies take place on a round brick patio under the oaks, with a wooden arch at the front and white garden chairs for your guests. Sophia and Thomas dressed the arch in greenery and deep red roses and added wine barrels along the aisle, which suited the country setting perfectly.

The Reception Hall

The reception hall has a vaulted ceiling, a wall of windows, wood plank accent walls and geometric pendant lights. It works for dinner, toasts and dancing, and it can also host your ceremony if you'd rather say your vows indoors.

Sophia and Thomas set their tables with deep red runners, greenery, candles and gold chargers, and the warm wood walls made the whole room glow.

Getting-Ready Rooms

The Copper Door offers a bridal suite and a groom's suite as add-ons. The bridal suite has big windows with soft natural light, which is exactly what you want for getting-ready photos.

Golden Hour on the Lawn

The open lawn is the best spot on the property at sunset. With the oaks along the edge and nothing blocking the sky, the light stays soft and warm. Sophia and Thomas brought a white parasol for their portraits, and it made for some of our favorite frames of the day.

Wedding Party Photos

The farmhouse facade and the ceremony arch are both great backdrops for wedding party photos. Sophia's bridesmaids wore deep red, and Thomas and his groomsmen wore black tuxedos with red ties, which stood out against the stone and the oaks.

Toasts, Dancing and the Send-Off

Toasts and dancing happen in the hall, and with the rental running until 11 p.m., there's plenty of time for a full party. Sophia and Thomas ended the night with a send-off through a tunnel of their guests and a wave from their getaway car.

Decor Ideas from Sophia and Thomas's Wedding

  • Go with deep red and greenery. Burgundy florals and bridesmaid dresses look rich against the wood and stone.
  • Dress the arch. Greenery and red roses on the wooden arch frame the ceremony without overpowering it.
  • Add wine barrels along the aisle for a country touch.
  • Use gold chargers and candles on the tables to warm up the hall.
  • Bring a parasol for golden hour portraits on the lawn.
