Couples & Wedding PArty

One of the most memorable parts of a wedding day at the McNay is stepping away after the ceremony to capture portraits of the couple. The museum’s courtyard and gardens are unlike anything else in San Antonio — with Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, arched walkways, tiled fountains, and vibrant landscaping that create a timeless, European feel. The light filters beautifully through the trees, making it an ideal space for romantic, golden-hour portraits that look straight out of a painting.

Beyond the gardens, the McNay offers something truly unique: the ability to take portraits inside the museum itself. Couples are surrounded by priceless works of art and dramatic architectural details, which add a refined and elevated feel to their gallery. Photographing inside an actual art museum is a rare opportunity, and it makes the McNay stand out as a venue where every wedding gallery feels deeply personal and unforgettable.

The Reception

The Chapel at Gruene first dance

First Dance

The first dance at the McNay Art Museum is always a breathtaking moment, made even more special by the venue’s historic charm and artistic atmosphere. Couples often choose to share this tradition in the courtyard, where string lights glow overhead and the Spanish architecture creates a romantic backdrop. Surrounded by family and friends, the atmosphere feels both intimate and timeless — a celebration of love framed by one of San Antonio’s most iconic landmarks.

For couples hosting their reception indoors, the McNay’s elegant halls bring a completely different kind of magic. The art-filled spaces add depth and sophistication, giving your first dance a cinematic quality. Whether you opt for a grand twirl under the stars or a quiet sway in a gallery, the McNay transforms this milestone into a memory as unforgettable as the museum itself.

The cake cutting at the McNay Art Museum feels as elegant as the rest of the day. Most couples choose to stage the cake in the courtyard or one of the museum’s stunning reception spaces, where the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and lush surroundings create a timeless backdrop. With guests gathered around, the moment feels intimate yet celebratory, framed by the beauty of the gardens or the museum’s art-filled interiors.

The McNay’s unique character makes even this small tradition stand out. Whether the couple keeps it classic with a simple slice or shares a playful moment of laughter, the setting elevates the experience. In photos, the contrast of the cake against historic walls, tiled details, or greenery ensures the images are both fun and refined — a sweet highlight of the evening that fits perfectly with the museum’s artistic charm.

The Chapel at Gruene sparkler sendoff

Send-Off

The McNay Art Museum provides a truly iconic setting for a wedding send-off. Most couples choose the front of the museum for their exit, where the grand Spanish Colonial Revival façade and sweeping courtyard stairs set the stage for a dramatic finale. Guests line the pathway with sparklers, bubbles, or ribbon wands, creating a tunnel of light and cheers as the newlyweds make their way into the night.

The architecture of the museum itself elevates the send-off — the tall arches, tiled details, and warm glow of the building at night give the moment a cinematic quality. It’s a breathtaking way to close the evening, and the photos are every bit as striking as the celebration itself. Whether you opt for something grand and sparkling or intimate and simple, the McNay ensures your exit is unforgettable.
