Alyssa and Cole's Speakeasy Engagement Photos at Bar 1919
Alyssa and Cole's engagement session started somewhere most couples never think to look: Bar 1919, the speakeasy tucked below the Blue Star Arts Complex in Southtown San Antonio. After the bar, Alyssa changed into a long white gown and we headed downtown to San Fernando Cathedral, the Bexar County Courthouse, City Hall and the River Walk.
If you've been searching for bar or speakeasy engagement photos in San Antonio, this session shows what's possible, and how well a moody indoor location pairs with the city's historic landmarks.
Why Bar 1919 Is Perfect for Speakeasy Engagement Photos
Bar 1919 sits at 1420 S. Alamo St., down a dimly lit flight of stairs inside the Blue Star complex. The room is built to feel like the Prohibition era: low light, dark wood, leather seating and a long bar backed by shelves of whiskey. The bar is known for one of the largest spirits selections in Texas, and all those glowing bottles make an incredible backdrop.
For Alyssa and Cole, that meant photos with real atmosphere: Cole in a black suit and white cowboy hat, Alyssa in a short white dress that glows against the dark room, and the two of them right at home along the bar.
Most bars can't host a photo session while they're serving guests. Thanks to our relationship with the team at Bar 1919, Mayfields couples get to photograph inside privately, without a crowd in the background.
Our Favorite Spots Inside Bar 1919
- The long bar, with backlit shelves of bottles behind you. Alyssa sat up on the bar while Cole leaned in, and it's one of our favorite frames from the day.
- The leather booths, for a cozier, close-up feel.
- The doorways and dark wood paneling, which frame you like a scene from an old film.
- The details. A cocktail on the bar next to your hands shows off the ring and tells the story of the place.
Tips for Bar Engagement Photos in San Antonio
- Wear something that stands out against a dark room. Alyssa's white dress and Cole's black suit were made for a moody bar.
- Bring a signature accessory. Cole's cowboy hat gave the whole session a Texas twist.
- Plan an outfit change. Indoor bar photos and outdoor city photos call for different looks, and two outfits give you twice the variety.
- Pair the bar with an outdoor location. A dark speakeasy gives you drama, and sunlit downtown gives you light and air. Together they make a complete gallery.
Then Downtown: Cathedral, Courthouse, City Hall and the River Walk
For the second half of the session, we headed downtown. San Fernando Cathedral, the Bexar County Courthouse, City Hall and the River Walk all sit within a few blocks of each other around Main Plaza and Military Plaza, so you can cover all four on foot.
San Fernando Cathedral
San Fernando was founded in 1731 by settlers from the Canary Islands and is home to the oldest continuously functioning religious community in Texas. Its pale stone facade, rose window and tall arched wooden doors make it one of the most striking backdrops downtown. It's an active church, so plan your session around Mass times and weddings.
Bexar County Courthouse
Across Main Plaza, the Bexar County Courthouse was completed in 1896 in the Romanesque Revival style, built from Texas granite and red sandstone. Its covered entrance, with warm red stone and a hanging lantern, adds rich color even in the middle of the day.
San Antonio City Hall
City Hall sits in the middle of Military Plaza, just west of the cathedral. The building dates to 1891, and its wide limestone steps and arched doors, with "City Hall" lettered above, are a classic downtown backdrop.
The River Walk
A short walk east of Main Plaza takes you down to the River Walk. We finished with the stone railings, the cypress trees along the water and a colorful tile mural along the walkway.

Speakeasy Engagement Photo FAQ
Can you take engagement photos inside a bar in San Antonio?
Usually only with permission, and most bars won't allow a session while they're serving guests. Bar 1919 is one of the spots where our couples have private access, so if you love the speakeasy look, ask us about it when you book. For more inspiration, see our 8 speakeasy engagement photo ideas.
What should we wear for bar engagement photos?
Contrast works best. Light colors like white, cream or champagne glow against dark wood, and a tailored suit or dark jacket keeps the look polished. If you're planning a second location outdoors, bring a second outfit for it.
How long does a bar and downtown session take?
Alyssa and Cole's session ran about two hours, including the outfit change and the drive downtown. Plan on about two hours if you want both.
When is the best time for downtown photos?
Weekdays are quieter. Main Plaza and the River Walk get busy on weekends and during events, so a weekday session gives you more room to move.
